INGREDIENTS:
- 1 cup long-grain white rice
- 2 tablespoons unsalted butter
- 4 large onions, thinly sliced
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 teaspoon sugar
- 1/2 cup dry white wine
- 4 cups beef broth
- 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
- Salt and black pepper to taste
- 1 cup shredded Gruyère cheese
- Fresh thyme for garnish
DIRECTIONS:
- Cook the rice according to package instructions. Set aside.
- In a large skillet, melt the butter over medium heat.
- Add the thinly sliced onions and garlic, stirring occasionally until they become soft and golden brown.
- Sprinkle sugar over the caramelizing onions to enhance sweetness.
- Pour in the dry white wine to deglaze the pan, scraping up any brown bits from the bottom.
- Add beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, salt, and black pepper.
- Simmer for 15-20 minutes to allow the flavors to meld.
- Preheat the broiler.
- Mix the cooked rice into the onion soup mixture.
- Transfer the mixture to an oven-safe dish and sprinkle shredded Gruyère cheese over the top.
